RIP Fred Jary

Updated: May 4, 2023

Everyone at Ladywell is saddened to hear that Fred Jary, the club's former President and Captain, has passed away at the age of 86.

Fred was a prominent and active member of Ladywell Bowling Club from the moment he joined in 1991. He was not only a keen player, but a skilful one, too - and he was always happy to give advice to other players to help them improve their game.

Over the years, as well as acting as club President and Captain, Fred also represented Ladywell in countless competitions, and he was also our men's champion for a number of years. But Fred was far more than a player for the club. He was always willing to lend a hand to make Ladywell a welcoming place for all members. Whether it was plumbing, welding a broken hinge or fitting a sunshade on the clubhouse, he was always one of the first to put his hand up and volunteer to help out.

Current Ladywell Captain, Phil Welch said: "Fred was a fierce competitor and an excellent bowler - a winning combination that gave him a lot of success on the green. And he was always happy to share his knowledge and love of the game with everyone around him."

Current Ladywell President, Peter Ebden commented: "I've known Fred for quite a few years and always found him ready to help us fledglings with advice. He helped me a lot and I'm grateful to have known him - he was a great asset to the club and the sport of bowls."

Fred passed away on Sunday, March 19 2023 at the age of 86. His funeral will take place at Eltham Crematorium, West Chapel, Crown Woods Way, SE9 2AZ, on Thursday 4th May at 4pm.

On behalf of Fred’s family, thank you all for such a lovely tribute. He loved his bowls and I’m sure he would have remembered fondly the many happy hours he spent playing for Ladywell - he would always be the first to tell us that he had won a game for the club! Thank you - Ian Wells-Gaston (Fred’s grandson) on behalf of our extended family and Fred’s wife Joan.
