Match report: Ladywell v West Beckenham friendly

Ladywell's friendly match at West Beckenham on Tuesday June 20th saw a mixed set of results for the Ladywell triples.

On the first rink, the Ladywell team of Ian Bradford, Marion Edwards and Skip, Phil Welch, got off to a slow start, losing the first two ends by single shots. But they soon got into their stride, gaining four on the following two ends to take a 4-2 lead. The match then became a close-fought contest as both teams upped their games and the lead passed back and forth. First the home side took a 5-4 lead, only for Ladywell to hit back with three shots to move ahead by 7-5. But at the halfway mark, the West Beckenham triple had pegged the lead back again, so the match was tied at 7-7. After the break, the Ladywell team came out refreshed, and Skip Phil played three shots right on the jack at the tenth end, for a gain of three shots. Ladywell followed this up on the next end, with another two shots to take a 12-7 lead. Despite West Beckenham gaining two on the following end, Ladywell then pulled away and with three ends to play, they had a decisive 19-9 lead. The West Beckenham triple fought back valiantly on the final three ends to cut Ladywell's lead, but it wasn't enough and Ladywell gained a hard fought 19-16 victory.

The second rink saw a very different contest. The Ladywell triple of Alvin Nelson, Bernie Jermin and Skip, Des Marrett pulled away in the early stages, so after six ends they had a healthy 7-2 lead. But the home side fought their way back into the match and at the break after nine ends, they'd cut the deficit to 6-8. Then the match turned on the tenth end, when the home side gained six shots. They followed this up with two more winning ends, gaining three and two shots to take a 17-8 lead. This proved too much for the Ladywell side, who only managed to gain a further three points in the match, finally going down 23-11.

The final match saw a close affair between two evenly matched triples. It was the home side who gained the first points of the match and they built a healthy 8-2 lead after eight ends, only for the Ladywell triple of Susan Levene, Terrie Sibley and Skip, Richard Moorhouse to pick up a useful three shots on the last end before the break. Despite losing a single shot on the tenth end, Ladywell continued to chase the hosts down and by the 13th end, the two teams were tied at 9-9. But Ladywell couldn't maintain their momentum and once the hosts had got their noses in front, they managed to stay ahead, taking the match by 15-10.

This meant that the final result was a win for West Beckenham by 54-40.
