Ladywell v Southwark Sports: Ron Hams Cup match report

Ladywell played their final Ron Hams Cup Round Robin match against Southwark Sports on Wednesday 5th July - and it was another successful day.

As usual in the Ron Hams Cup, the afternoon saw one singles, one pairs and one triples match, with the winner on each rink gaining two points and the winning club on overall points scored gaining an extra four points.

In the singles match, the winner is the first to 21 points and Ladywell's Mark Simmons got off to a slow start, giving away four shots on the first end and facing a 6-0 deficit after three ends. By the ninth end, he was still trailing by six shots, with his opponent leading 13-7. But a series of winning ends for Mark, including a four on the 14th end, meant that he overturned the deficit to lead 17-15 after fifteen ends. But his opponent struck back on the next three ends to take a 20-17 lead. Again, Mark pulled back the deficit with a two and a single, to tie the scores at 20-all. So, it came down to the 21st end, where Mark gained the point he needed to take the match by the narrowest of margins, 21-20.

The pairs match saw the Ladywell pair of Norman Lewis and Des Marrett take an early 5-2 lead after three ends. But then their Southwark Sports opponents got into their stride. By the eighth end, the two teams were tied at 7-7, but then the Southwark Sports pair gained four shots on the ninth end and followed this with a run of four scoring ends, to take a 15-7 lead. Despite Norman and Des picking up a couple of shots on the following two ends, their opponents gained another four shots on the 16th end for a 19-9 lead. The final five ends saw the teams exchange shots, but the away team maintained their 10-point advantage for a 24-14 victory.

On the triples rink, the Ladywell team of Marion Edwards, Richard Moorhouse and Skip, Phil Welch, got off to a flying start in their 18-end match, consistently frustrating their opponents by securing single-shot gains from seemingly losing positions on a number of ends. So, by the eighth end, Ladywell had pulled away to a 10-0 lead. Their Southwark Sports opponents finally got on the board on the last end before the break, and the two teams went in for tea with a score of 10-1 to Ladywell. After the break, the away team pulled the score back to a 12-3 deficit on the 13th end, but Ladywell gained eight shots over the next four ends, giving them an unbeatable margin, which they held onto for a comfortable 20-6 win.

This meant Ladywell won the overall match by 55-50, gaining eight points to Southwark Sports' two and maintaining Ladywell's lead at the top of the Round Robin table.

Having played all their matches, Ladywell now need to wait until the rest of the Round Robin matches have been played to see if they qualify for the Cup Final as one of the top two clubs.
