Ladywell v Dulwich Park: Ron Hams Cup match report

Ladywell's strong run in the Ron Hams Cup Round Robin continued on Saturday 1st July against Dulwich Park.

The Ron Hams Cup involves singles, pairs and triples matches, with the winning club on each rink gaining two points and the overall winner on points scored gaining a further four points. But unfortunately, the Dulwich Park tema arrived a player short, so the two Captains decided that Dulwich Park would forfeit the singles match and the other two matches would play under normal rules.

In the pairs, Ladywell's Susan Levene and Skip, Des Marrett got off to a strong start and after five ends, they were leading 5-2. But then their opponents got into their stride and took four shots on the next two ends for a narrow 6-5 lead. In a tightly-fought contest, the two teams swapped scores, so after 12 ends, they were tied at 9-9. Southwark Park then gained two on the next end, only for Ladywell to come straight back with two shots of their own for an 11-11 scoreline with seven ends to play. This was when the Southwark Park team began to gain the upper hand, securing six shots on the next three ends to take a 17-11 lead. Again, Susan and Des tried to even the scores, taking singles on the following three ends. But it wasn't quite enough and with a score of two on the final end, the away team had won 19-14.

The Ladywell triple of Marion Edwards, Norman Lewis and Skip, Phil Welch, got off to a very slow start and after five ends, they were 8-1 down. But they soon got into their rhythm, picking up seven shots over the following four ends, to go in at the break trailing by a single shot, 9-8. After the break, their opponents pulled away once again for an 11-8 lead. But this was where the match turned, with all three Ladywell players playing some tremendous shots, as they went on a run of six consecutive scoring ends, and picking up 14 shots to take a comfortable 22-11 lead. So, despite losing a shot on the final end, the Ladywell triple had gained a deserved victory by 22-12.

This gave the overall win to Ladywell by 36-31, meaning that Ladywell gained eight points and Dulwich Park gained two.
