Ladywell's Bowls Open Day a great success

More than 50 people enjoyed the chance to have a go at bowls for free at Ladywell's Open Day on Sunday 26th May.

Despite the ominous weather forecast, Ladywell's Open Day was a great success, with a steady stream of visitors throughout the day getting onto the green and learning about bowls from club members. With free refreshments and glorious sunshine for the majority of the day - apart from one short, sharp shower - the club welcomed over 50 visitors.

Club Captain Phil Welch was very pleased with the success of the Open Day: "It was lovely to see six rinks being used all at once, with a green full of players of all ages having a go at bowls," he said. "And for the vast majority of them, it was their very first experience of the sport. So it's great that we've been able to introduce bowls to a whole new audience. And at least one visitor was so taken with the game that he's already decided to become a member of the club!"

Phil says the club's hoping to build on this success by welcoming more of these visitors back to the green in Ladywell Fields for social bowls sessions over the summer. "Certainly a number of people I spoke to at the Open Day were interested in joining in with our sessions on Wednesday evenings from 6-8pm and Monday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons from 1 o'clock to 4 o'clock," he added. "At just £5 for a few hours of bowls, they seemed to think it's a bargain. And I agree - although, of course, I'm biased!"

He says hopefully, some of them will become members of the club in the future. "Clubs like ours can only keep going if we have enough members," he points out. "They're the lifeblood of the club - so, we need to keep attracting new players to our sport. And events like the Open Day are a great way to do that. But it couldn't have happened without the support of our current members. So, I'd like to thank all the Ladywell club members who helped to make the Open Day a success. Without them, we wouldn't have been able to welcome so many new visitors."
