Ladywell settle for runners-up spot in bowls final

Having reached their first final in three years, Ladywell's bowlers were disappointed in their bid to pick up a winner's trophy in the Beckenham, Bromley & District Bowling Association's (B&BDBA) Triples League final on Sunday 15th September.

The final at the HSBC Bowling Club in Beckenham, involved two triples matches played on the same green at the same time, with the winners decided on the overall score across the two games. On both rinks, Ladywell's opponents, Orpington got off to a flying start and Ladywell soon faced a large deficit, being 10-1 down in one rink and 12-1 down on the other. But the two Ladywell teams of Merlin Ramdawar, Richard Moorhouse and Skip, Des Marrett on one rink and Ian Bradford, Slawek Rutkowski and Skip, Phil Welch on the other, started to rally. In fact, at one point, Des, Richard and Merlin were only four shots behind their opponents.

Unfortunately, the lead that Orpington had built up was too big to overcome. So, despite Phil, Slawek and Ian gaining five shots on the final end, they lost 22-13, while the other Ladywell triple eventually lost 26-9. So the final score was a defeat for Ladywell by 22-48 and they had to settle for the runners-up trophy and shields.

As the club with the fewest members in the B&BDBA, it was an excellent effort for Ladywell to reach the final. And, as one of our opponents put it recently: "You may be a small club, but you always seem to punch above your weight." So, fingers crossed we can go one better next year.
