Ladywell gain season's first win in bowls triples league

Ladywell gained their first win in the Beckenham, Bromley & District Bowling Association (B&BDBA) Triples League on Friday 26th July in a closely fought match against Bromley Bowling Club.

The League involves triples matches played home and away at the same time. In a Round Robin format, the winning team on each green gains two points and the winning club on overall points scored gains a further two points.

After a comprehensive defeat to Orpington Bowling Club in their opening match of the season, Ladywell were determined to make amends against Bromley. In the match at Ladywell, the home triple of Merlin Ramdawar, Slawek Rutkowski and Skip, Bernie Jermin faced a strong all-ladies team from Bromley, with the opposing Skip playing some excellent shots. The Ladywell triple were on the back foot from the start and eventually lost 18-10.

The away match was a different story, with the Ladywell triple of Steve Marlow, Terrie Sibley and Skip, Phil Welch, getting off to a steady start, gaining one shot on each of the first three ends. Their Bromley opponents pulled one back on the fourth end, but the fifth end turned out to be the one that eventually settled the overall match. The Ladywell team played some great woods, gaining eight shots on the end and extending their lead to 11-1. Despite the home team's best efforts, the Ladywell triple continued to play some excellent bowls, and extended their lead further, eventually winning 22-10.

This meant Ladywell took the overall win by 32-28 and gained four points to Bromley's two. So, the final match in the Round Robin between Ladywell and local rivals Francis Drake could decide which team qualifies for the semi-finals.
