John Collyer League - Ladywell v Southwark Park match report

Ladywell's run of wins in the John Collyer League continued on Wednesday 19th July with a home match against Southwark Park.

John Collyer League matches are played by three triples over 18 ends. The winning club on each rink gains two points, while the overall winning club on aggregate scores gains a further four points.

The weather was perfect for bowls, with warm sunshine and a gentle breeze welcoming the two teams. On the first rink, after conceding a shot on the first end, the Ladywell triple of Sally Bryan, Norman Lewis and Skip, Richard Moorhouse got into their stride, taking three and four shots on the next two ends for a 7-1 lead. The visitors pulled three shots back on the fourth end, but a run of four consecutive winning ends for Ladywell saw them take a comfortable 12-4 lead into the break after nine ends. After swapping shots on the first two ends following the break, the 13th end saw a decisive swing towards Ladywell, when they gained four shots to secure a 17-8 lead. And despite only picking up two more shots over the final five ends, they eventually gained victory by 19-15.

The second rink saw a tight first half for the Ladywell triple of Susan Levene, Ian Bradford and Mark Simmons. The opening three ends were close affairs, with the Ladywell triple scoring steadily to take a 3-0 lead. The two teams then swapped single shots on the next six ends, so by the halfway mark, Ladywell's lead stood at 6-3. After the break, on the tenth end the visitors once again gained a single shot, but then the Ladywell team asserted their authority, winning seven of the next eight ends and pulling away to a 16-5 win.

This left the third Ladywell triple of Alvin Nelson, Des Marrett and Phil Welch to try to secure full points for the home side. After the Southwark Park team took a shot on the first end, the Ladywell triple got into their stride, and after the seventh end, they had a 7-4 lead. The eighth end saw them extend this considerably, gaining five shots. And with a further single on the ninth end, they went into the break 13-4 up. After the break, the Ladywell team continued to pull away, with scores of 2,2,4,3 and 3. So, by the 16th end, they had a convincing 27-7 lead. And despite giving away six shots on the final two ends, they gained a comfortable 27-13 win.

This gave Ladywell all ten league points, with an overall 62-33 win.
